Hazardous Chemicals Register

Purpose. This register lists the hazardous chemicals held at the three sites and carried by site crews, with hazard classification, storage location, maximum quantity and safety data sheet status.

1.How the register is kept

The Technical, Quality and WHS Manager maintains this register. A product is added when approved under the Environment and Waste Policy and removed when the last container leaves site. Safety data sheets no older than five years are held in the red folders at each store and on the intranet. The register is checked against physical stock each quarter and after any spill.

2.Dandenong South, moulding and extrusion

Polymer resins in granule form are not classified as hazardous but generate fumes when overheated; the products below are the classified materials held in the moulding hall, extrusion area and store.

• Purge compound, mineral filled: not classified, generates fumes; 200 kilograms; purge store
• Mould release spray, aerosol: flammable; 24 cans; flammable cabinet
• Mould cleaner solvent, aerosol: flammable, irritant; 24 cans; flammable cabinet
• Hydraulic oil: not classified, combustible; 1,000 litres; bunded oil store
• PVC compound with lead-free stabiliser: dust irritant; 4 tonnes; extrusion silo
• Cooling water biocide, isothiazolinone: corrosive, sensitiser; 20 litres; water treatment cabinet

3.Bayswater cable works

The cable works holds wire drawing lubricant, cross-linking compound and marking inks in addition to PVC and polyethylene compounds.

• Wire drawing lubricant emulsion: irritant; 400 litres; drawing machine sump and drum store
• Cross-linkable polyethylene compound with peroxide: heat sensitive; 2 tonnes; cool compound store
• Marking ink, solvent based: flammable, irritant; 40 litres; flammable cabinet
• Ink cleaning solvent: flammable; 20 litres; flammable cabinet
• Talc: dust; 200 kilograms; dry store

4.Wingfield rubber and belting works

The rubber works holds the compounding chemicals, curing agents and solvents used in mixing, curing and splicing. Peroxides and accelerators are stored apart.

• Carbon black: dust, combustible; 3 tonnes; silo and bag store
• Sulfur: flammable solid; 200 kilograms; curing agent store
• Accelerators, thiazole and sulfenamide types: irritant, sensitiser; 100 kilograms; curing agent store
• Zinc oxide: hazardous to aquatic life; 300 kilograms; bag store
• Organic peroxide curing agent: organic peroxide, oxidiser; 50 kilograms; cool peroxide cabinet, separate from accelerators
• Process oil, aromatic: harmful; 1,000 litres; bunded oil store
• Rubber cement and solvent, splicing: flammable, harmful; 100 litres; flammable cabinet and site crew boxes
• Toluene for cleaning: flammable, harmful; 40 litres; flammable cabinet

5.Site crew boxes

Each splicing crew carries a sealed chemical box with cements, solvent and uncured rubber. The box contents and quantities are recorded on the crew's job card and reconciled on return.

• Rubber cement: flammable; maximum 10 litres per crew box
• Cleaning solvent: flammable; maximum 5 litres per crew box
• Tie gum and cover rubber, uncured: not classified; as per splice kit

6.Review

This register is reviewed in full each November, when a product is added or removed and after any spill or exposure event.
